With an election coming up, those who are about to move house should be aware of what they need to do so that they will be eligible to vote. Regardless of whether you’re staying in the same local authority area or not, you need to re-register to vote when you move home. Take a pause from your packing to find out what you need to do to make sure that you can have your say come voting day.
How to Register
You can easily register to vote online, providing you have your National Insurance number to hand. Alternatively, you can register to vote by post by downloading a form online or requesting one from Electoral Registration Office, but this can take considerably longer that online, which takes approximately 5 minutes.
Remember to provide your previous address when registering so that you can be removed from the register at your old address.
Registration Deadlines
You must register to vote 12 working days prior to the election day. If choosing to register by posts, factor in posting time and other issues that could make completing registration more difficult. You’ll also need to factor in extra time if you’re planning on completing a postal vote rather than visiting a polling station.
Familiarise yourself with local candidates
If you’re moving to a different voting area, then it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with candidates standing for election. You may find that despite standing for your preferred party, candidates have different proposed policies and values, which could mean that you want to change the party that you vote for.
