Who needs to know that you’re Moving Home?

Chatting to your family and friends about your move means that they are already aware of where you’re going to, but who else should you inform?

The list of people and businesses who need to know about your change of address is potentially endless, but we’ve put together a list of key contacts that you’ll need to inform of your move as soon as possible and useful advice that will help you with your move.

Royal Mail

Let Royal Mail know that you’re moving, and pay for their redirection service. This will stop any post going to your old address while you get everything up-to-date.

Utilities and Finance

Think about your monthly household expenses, and contact the following to notify them of a change in your address:

  • Telephone and mobile phone providers
  • TV licensing and satellite providers
  • Water, gas, and electricity providers
  • Internet provider
  • Your bank or building society
  • Credit card companies
  • Council tax department

If you’re unsure of who you need to contact, take a look at your bank statements for the last six months. Any direct debits or standing orders that are paid to companies and utility providers should be contacted.

Schools and Employers

Be sure to let any schools and employers know about your move. Whether it’s you or your children that are in education, informing your school of your move means that you don’t miss on out updates or enrolment information. Letting your employer know means that your pay check will be sent to the right place.

Motoring

If you’ve got a vehicle, you should inform the following about your move to avoid considerable fines:

  • Insurance Company
  • DVLA
  • Breakdown Cover
  • Vehicle Registration.
  • Health

Let your doctor, dentist, optician, etc. know that you’re moving home. This will prevent valuable items, such as contact lenses, and confidential letters, being sent to your former address.

Loyalty Cards and Subscriptions

These are often the most likely to be forgotten, and shouldn’t necessarily be a priority when you move. Updating personal information for your loyalty cards is best done once you’ve moved and settled into your new place, but can usually be done easily online.

Remember to also update your details for any subscriptions, whether it be for magazines or streaming accounts such as Netflix.

Provide an Alternative Form of Contact

With email and mobile phones it is easy to provide people with an alternative way of getting in touch. When notifying people and businesses of your move, provide them with your mobile number, and your email address, so that they can make contact with you during your move.

Consider going Paperless

Why not consider going paperless to avoid bills, bank statements, and other important documents from being sent to the wrong location? Most companies now offer this alternative, as it makes it easier for individuals to manage their affairs, cuts down on costs, and is more environmentally friendly. It also means that there is no possibility of you missing final bills, or receiving important information.

Is your Move Confirmed?

Before picking up the phone, or sending out reams of emails, think about exactly when you’re going to be moving. If you’ve yet to finalise your plans, then best to wait until everything has been officially confirmed. Having to re-contact everyone you’ve spoken to and tell them that the sale or rental agreement has fallen through causes twice as much hassle for you.

While we can’t help you contact all the people you need to inform of your change of address, there are plenty of others things we can help you with during your move. From providing packing equipment, to providing a removal van and friendly, reliable staff, here at Intransit, we provide a one stop removal shop.
